Part of the London Summer Park Race series. Flyer here.
Highgate Wood and Queens Wood are ancient woodland of primarily oak, hornbeam and holly. On the higher ground at the northern end of Highgate Wood, archaeologists have recorded the remains of now-buried Roman pottery kilns that produced wares for Londinium. In medieval times, Highgate Wood fell within the Bishop of London’s vast deer park and was used for hunting; Muswell Hill Road that separates it from Queen’s Wood ran along the outskirts of the park from Hampstead to Muswell Hill. Earth banks in Highgate Wood are possibly medieval; whilst those in Queen’s Wood are probably mid-16th century woodland management enclosures.
