What we recommend to do before joining LOK
Julie, as the Membership Secretary, frequently gets asked “How do I get involved in orienteering and LOK?”
This is her advice:
Look for a local (Grade C or D) event (see Events). The Park Series in early summer or the GLOSS Series in summer are good for beginners. But you can turn up at any event (not just those organised by LOK), and there is normally somebody assigned to talk to newcomers and get you started. Please feel free to ask questions (the sport is full of jargon and seasoned orienteers use it constantly).
Once you have gone to two or three events and convinced yourself that you want to get more involved, you can decide whether you would like to join the club (as outlined above).
Keep an eye out for any LOK member – our O-tops are pretty distinctive – and introduce yourself, please.
You are more than welcome to go to LOK training – details under About us on the site – and if people are organising lifts to a specific event, you might be in luck.

Two key tips for beginners: 1) always mark your present location by keeping your thumb on the map; and, 2) keep rotating the map to the way you are facing
